Richmond is the state capital of Virginia and, as such, it boasts a rich history, both Civil War and Revolutionary.
Start your day exploring this historic hotbed with breakfast — made up of a breakfast sandwich and pastry, plus locally roasted coffee — from Lamplighter Roasting Company. There are three Lamplighter locations to pick from, so choose the one closest to you.
Then, it’s off to a free museum. The Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU is filled with interesting artwork, but also offers a packed calendar of events of all types, from parties to lectures.
Then, go over to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, also free. Check out the 20th-century European art gallery, the Modernist gallery, the Faberge works and the Contemporary American art. You’ll find a little bit of it all.
Grab lunch at Can Can Brasserie, where the French-inspired lunch menu offers delicious, light options easy on the wallet, like a croquet monsieur, croque madame, bouillabaisse or moules frites, all for less than $16.
Get a little fresh air after lunch with a trip to Belle Isle. You can take the footbridge across the James River for some exercise. Belle Isle was a prison site for Union soldiers during the Civil War.
For more dark history, visit The Hollywood Cemetery. Tours are available, but exploring on foot is welcome, too. You’ll see the burial places of Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the Richmond Vampire.
End your day with dinner at the cozy and hip Saison, where you’ll find menu items with both Latin and Southern inspiration. If it’s a Sunday, make sure to stop by for Sunday fried chicken night.
