The laidback mountain town of San Carlos de Bariloche is on every outdoor adventurer’s bucket list. Equal parts charming and exciting, Argentina’s chocolate paradise is a winter wonderland with plenty of affordable things to explore.
Start with breakfast at Cafe Gino for great coffee and pastries for less than $7. From there, take a stroll around Centro Civico. The city center is lined with boutique log shops, restaurants and the beautiful cathedral that stands tall along the skyline. Next, hitch a ride to Nahuel Huapi. The national park is located on and around the lake and offers incredible hiking. As the biggest draw in Bariloche, feel free to spend the morning taking in the incredible sights. A bus or cab here will cost $5.
Stop for lunch at Belek for some scrumptious burgers at roughly $15. Then you can begin your afternoon exploration discovering why this city is known for its incredible chocolates. Stop by Museo del Chocolate Havanna for a tour of the process and plenty of free samples. Entrance is less than $5. Next, head over to Museo de la Patagonia to learn all about the history of the region and discover some fantastic artifacts. Entrance is $3.
Finally, you can’t visit Bariloche without a trip to the top of Cerro Otto. The breathtaking mountain towers over the city and is one of the most popular skiing spots in Argentina. A cable car will take you to the top to soak in the views for just $13.
Once you’re back on the ground, finish at D.o.n.d.e.r.a for a hefty meal of Spanish cuisine for roughly $20.
