Under $100 / North America

Besides the hit TV show Portlandia, Portland Ore., is filled with many activities from adventure to romantic to just strange. The largest city in Oregon is often seen as touristy; however, underneath the common attractions is a mix of scenic landscapes, bustling neighborhoods, microbreweries, distilleries and more.

If it’s not raining, begin your day at the Horsetail Falls Trail — an easy 2.7-mile trail that takes you past 176-foot Horsetail Falls, above Oneanta Falls and beyond Ponytail Falls. Be aware, some of the cliffs are steep. The trailhead area is a great picnic spot, so head out early and watch the sunrise while enjoying a bite to eat. For an optional 1.8-mile side trip, see Triple Falls.

Smell the roses at Portland’s International Rose Test Garden. This is the oldest public garden of its kind with the purpose of testing rose varieties. The garden has more than 7,000 roses in 550 different shapes, colors and sizes, given unique names like Walking on Sunshine and Hot Tamale. Admission to the garden is free.

As the food truck scene in the city continues to bloom, the Portland Mercado pod is worthy of the fixation. You can choose from Mexican, Colombian, Salvadoran and Argentinian food at indoor and outdoor picnic tables. If you’re too full for dessert, take home churros, chorizo and a piñata made from recycled materials. With more than 50 businesses in the public market, the plaza and kitchen bring together various cultures through food, art and entertainment.

Pose under the Keep Portland Weird sign located just south of the Burnside Bridge. The slogan is meant to embrace the uniqueness of the city and support local businesses.

Stop by the Freakbuttrue Peculiarium and Museum — it’s worth it, well maybe. This museum is filled with creepy oddities and experiences like the chance to take a photo getting an alien autopsy or viewing a dollhouse with a bloody massacred room. This freaky collection of sci-fi art exudes the motto of Portland and only costs $5 to enter. This is not meant for children, but for those who wish to stretch their imagination or stomachs. To really want make your skin crawl, back in 2015 dozens of people ordered the Bugs Eaters Delight sundae, topped with real bug larva and their photos made it to the Insectarian Club Hall of Fame.

End the night at The Alibi. The city can be accused of taking its beer, cider and cocktail culture too seriously, and this over-the-top tiki bar will attest to the stereotype. The Alibi serves neon tropical drinks that make the nightly karaoke seem easy.
