Destinations / Latin America

The South American country of Peru is notably home to a section of the Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu. There are numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites in the country to round out your visit.

Cultural

  • City of Cuzco: Located in the Peruvian Andes mountain range, Cuzco was developed as a complex urban center.
  • Historic Centre of Lima: Despite severe earthquake damage in years past, the city holds importance for its unique buildings.
  • Qhapaq Ñan, Andean Road System: The newest designated site on the list, this extensive network of roads covered more than 18,000 miles, spanning into other countries.

Natural

  • Huascarán National Park: This park is situated in the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range in the world. The region boasts deep ravines, glacial lakes and a variety of vegetation.
  • Manú National Park: The massive 3.7 million-acre park is home to more than 850 species of birds and other rare animal species.

Mixed

  • Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu: Designated in 1983, this site was created during the Incan Empire in the middle of a tropical mountain forest.
  • Rio Abiseo National Park: This man-made park was created in 1983 to protect the flora and fauna native to that particular region of the Andes.
