Travel industry news site Skift partnered with Project: Time Off, a part of the U.S. Travel Association, on a study of Americans’ vacation habits. In 2016, 54 percent of Americans did not use all of their vacation time. This translates to 662 million vacation days left unused. The study further breaks down the habits by state and city.

Market research group GfK conducted the online survey of 7,331 American workers over the age of 18 who work more than 35 hours weekly and receive paid vacation time from their employer. The data represents all 50 states and the 30 largest metropolitan areas, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Idaho tops the state list with 78 percent of its workers leaving vacation time unused in 2016. Washington, D.C. tops the city list for unused days. Educators (65 percent) and government workers (63 percent) used the least amount of vacation time in our nation’s capital. Common fears include stress they will be replaced, feeling their company doesn’t promote time off and worry what their boss will think.

Workers in Maine used the most vacation time with only 38 percent of those polled leaving vacation days unused. Work stress is lower than the national average in the four states with the most vacation usage: Maine, Hawai’i, Arkansas and Arizona. Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Orlando and Chicago are among the country’s most vacationed cities.
