It’s fair season, which means lots of fried foods, carnival rides and Americana.

The Texas State Fair is the country’s largest, and includes the huge Texas Star Ferris Wheel. Plan a small trip around the Dallas fair’s opening dates to take full advantage of the unique location’s unbeatable culture. Visit on a college football weekend and receive free fair admission with your game ticket, for a double hit of the best Texan offerings.

The Wisconsin State Fair is king of all fair food nationwide. If you can think it up, you can eat it. The fair is also held just outside of Milwaukee, so you can stay and tour some of the city’s best breweries before heading home. New menu items you’ll find this year include a deep-fried Old Fashioned cocktail and deep-fried bread pudding on a stick. Each season, the fair hands out its Sporkie awards for the best fair foods. This year’s finalists include the Bloody Mary burger, Thanksgiving Day burrito, fiesta cookie dough on a stick and more.

Sacramento’s California State Fair may be the only fair where you can partake in or watch a drone race and a horse race all at one venue. It’s the biggest carnival and biggest food festival in northern California and features more than 3,000 attractions for almost 1 million visitors. This year’s event runs through July 24.

The Iowa State Fair often receives its fair share of recognition. The Des Moines event is the most popular in the state and makes an appearance in a variety of pop culture media and historic registers. The one attraction nearly everyone knows? The cow sculpture created entirely from butter. This year’s event takes place Aug. 11–21, and features performances from Lady Antebellum, Meghan Trainor, Jason Derulo, Steven Tyler, KISS and more.
