The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, located in Santa Fe, N.M., is dedicated to the life, legacy and art of the artist. The museum opened in 1997, 11 years after O’Keeffe’s death.
O’Keeffe is perhaps best known for her large-scale depictions of flowers, leaves, rocks, shells, bones and other natural features. In addition to these memorable pieces, O’Keeffe also painted New York cityscapes and architectural and natural landscapes of northern New Mexico.
The museum houses a collection of 3,000 works. Among these works, visitors will find 140 oil paintings and nearly 700 drawings. Throughout the year, the museum changes the selection of these works. In addition, the museum presents special exhibitions combining O’Keeffe’s work with those of her American modernist contemporaries. Educational programs, including workshops, lectures and activities, are available year-round. In addition to the Santa Fe location, the museum also maintains O’Keeffe’s two homes and studios in northern New Mexico, a research center and library and various other collections related to the artist.
The museum is open daily, with hours varying by season. Adult admission costs $13. Guided tours come at an additional fee. For those willing to travel about 60 miles from Santa Fe, tours of O’Keefe’s home and studio are available. Reservations are required. Tours start at $35.
