Tips / Travel

As exotic and romantic as foreign travel can seem, some of the best sights can be seen in your own backyard and for a much cheaper price tag. This year, select U.S. national parks will open their gates for free, leaving no excuse for nature lovers to keep to their couches and forego a day exploring America’s beauty. In 2016, the U.S. National Park Service celebrated its centennial by offering 16 free days for visitors, and based on the success of this special, 124 of the 413 total parks will be free to visit for 10 days in 2017.

A few of the parks that charge admission fees include Yellowstone National Park in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming (normally $30 per vehicle), Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Glacier National Park in Montana.

These free days apply to entrance fees only and do not apply to other fees such as transportation, food and drinks, lodging or any designated park tours.

Take advantage of these 10 fee-less days at America’s best national parks, most of which occur during public and school holiday periods: Jan. 16; Feb. 20; April 15, 16, 22 and 23; Aug. 20; Sept. 30; and Nov. 11, 12. A full list of free-entry parks can be found on the National Park Service’s website.
