The Salzkammergut, or Lake District, is one of the most beautiful regions of Austria.
Home to 76 lakes, the area is a paradise for those who enjoy watersports, hiking and cycling. Visit during summer to see the amazing array of flowers and the imposing limestone mountains, and explore the numerous trails that snake through the area.
The most popular walking trails include Lake Wolfgang, suitable for beginners, and Lake Attersee, which requires some climbing experience. Even if you don’t want to set off on a multiday hike, you can drive around and park at the best beauty spots.
Get a taste for local culture in Hallstatt, a historic UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, home to the oldest salt mine in the world. Take a look at Lake Traunsee, with its waterfalls, the Gassl dripstone cave and the Rindbach gorge, or head to the Mondsee-Irrsee road for great mountain views.
The area is found west of Vienna, close to the city of Salzburg and the German border. Access to the area is equally easy from Munich, or you can head south to Slovenia if you fancy a road trip.
This part of Central Europe is great for exploring in summer, and you won’t be short of places to go or things to see.
