Some things are meant to be seen in person — a NASA rocket launch being one of them. We’ve all seen Apollo 13, but no film can encapsulate the sound and power of a real-life rocket firing into space. Follow these tips on your next trip to Florida and be amazed.
Research
You can find a list of rocket launches and events on the Kennedy Space Center website. There are two types of launches taking place here, rocket launches and shuttle launches. Rockets are for one-time use, while the shuttle lands on a runway.
Location
There are a number of beaches and viewing points on Florida’s “Space Coast” that give you a clear view of the launch, and most are free, like Cocoa Beach on Indian River. Jetty Park, close to Cape Canaveral has a park fee, but for a front-row seat you need to purchase a ticket for the airbase. Launches are usually held with a number of special events at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Prepare
Think of it like a tailgate or picnic. For the free viewing areas, bring bug spray, sunscreen, lawn chairs and anything you might bring to the park. For ticketed areas, make sure your chairs and coolers are permit specific as the rules are strictly enforced. Plan to arrive early, as areas can get packed fairly quickly, especially in the lead up to the launch.
