Tips / Travel

Do you feel a tinge of sadness when you look at your vacation fund? Do you find that your getaways are too few and far between? Sometimes it can be difficult waiting for your next big trip, but you can help speed the process along if you’re already practicing good budget and spending habits.

Firstly, it’s always a good idea to have a separate, designated budget just for travel. If your travel funds are bunched in with the rest of your cash flow, you won’t be able to get a good sense of what kind of travel you can or can’t afford at any given time. Designate a certain part of your savings to travel and keep track of its growth in some kind of digital document, adding a little more biweekly or monthly, each time you get a paycheck. Eliminate guessing from your travel funds.

It’s also good to have a particular goal in mind. We all have a bucket list of destinations we want to visit, so start checking them off now, knocking out the more affordable trips first. Dream of standing on the edge of a volcano in Hawaii? Make your goal about ending up in that location, rather than saving to a certain price point.

Eliminate any unnecessary spending that, in the long run, you wouldn’t mind giving up for the chance at an extra getaway. If you’d rather buy a plane ticket to Europe than a venti caffé latte from Starbucks every day for a year, make a decision to cut out that unnecessary cost and stick to your resolution.

A beginner’s salary or student loans shouldn’t keep you from doing what you love. If the thing you love is travel, browsing the prices of airfare and resorts can be discouraging, but they don’t have to be! Smart choices and little cutbacks here and there can make all the difference.
