Tips / Travel

After waiting in line to check in for a flight, followed by waiting in line to pass through security scanners, learning your flight is delayed means even more waiting is in your near future, which can send any traveler into a spiral of anger and impatience. The next time you face a late flight, take a deep breath and try to employ one of the tips below to get yourself through the dreaded period of uncertainty and eventually up into the air.

Before you even leave your house, take a quick glance at a weather app or turn on The Weather Channel. Knowing the local weather conditions at the airport can mentally prepare you for possible flight schedule issues. Download your airline’s mobile application as some are able to send direct notifications in the case of any schedule changes.

If you’ve already checked in and gone through security when you learn the disappointing news, make sure you are calm and collected, and then approach the attendant at the departure gate with any concerns you may have or to inquire about delay information, such as the reason the flight is delayed and when an expected departure time may be confirmed.

Use the extra time in the airport to charge your electronics, catch up on e-mails, shop for gifts or socialize in one of the airport bars. Making the most out of an unfortunate situation will put you in better spirits for when the flight actually does take off.

If the duration of the delay is long or unknown, inquire about possible discounts or complimentary stays at nearby hotels. Wake up rested and refreshed for a new day back at the airport.
