Tips / Safety

If you own a car, you have a lot of options when it comes to getting out of town whenever the mood strikes you. Whether or not you are a weekend hiker, short tripper or cross-country aficionado, you should probably keep a few items in your car to be prepared for any contingency. Anything can happen on the open road, so it is best to come prepared with some tools in the trunk.

First, car maintenance. You don’t have to be a mechanic to know it is a good idea to keep windshield wiper fluid and radiator fluid in your car. It is no joke when you are stuck on a snowy road in winter with an opaque windshield because you ran out. Jumper cables are also a great idea. With these in the car, you will not have to despair when you inevitably leave a light on. Second, for the safety of yourself and anyone in your car, keep some bottles of water and a box of Clif Bars in the trunk just in case you might need them. Additionally, an inexpensive blanket or two could also be welcome in case you need to camp out in the car until help arrives.

Lastly, prepare for breaking down on the road by keeping some reflectors or flares in the car in order to alert traffic of your presence on the side of the road. Now you are ready.
