Slovakia’s second-biggest city is a delightful place to spend a few days. Here is your guide to the most important sights in town.
While certain sights, such as the Cathedral of St Elizabeth, have been around for centuries, others facets of the city flourished after it was named European Capital of Culture in 2013. It’s worth taking a stroll down Hlavná Ulica, the main street on which there are lots of sights such as the cathedral, Saint Michael Chapel, the state theater and the so-called singing fountain.
There are also a number of beautiful palaces dotted around town, all of them worth a look. Check out the old town hall, Andrassy’s Palace, Bishop’s Palace and the Csáky-Dessewffy Palace, which houses the constitutional court of Slovakia as well as the biggest bookstore in Kosice. Another spectacular choice is Jacab’s Palace, made from old stones from the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth.
There aren’t many museums in Kosice, but the East Slovak Museum is a good one. There is also some interesting art at Muzeum Vojtecha Lofflera.
The whole of the center of the city is easily navigable on foot, so taking a walk is the best way to explore. There is certainly enough to see in Kosice to fill a couple of days.
