The Central European nation of Slovakia might not immediately spring to mind when you think of holiday destinations, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about visiting.
During winter, Slovakia shivers its way through icy months, but in summer the country boasts an amazing climate. In lowland areas, the mercury can reach 35 Celsius, whereas mountainous areas rarely push past 25 Celsius.
The mountains are great for hiking and camping, especially in the Tatra mountains. Use the city of Poprad as a gateway to peaks such as the 2,422-meter Satan and the 2,503-meter Rysy.
If you want a more leisurely break, head to the spa town of Bojnice in the west of the country. Get a treatment or two, and head to the Nitrianske Rudno dam to take part in some watersports.
The largest man-made lake in Slovakia, Zemplinska Sirava, is home to a famous resort popular for fishing, hiking and watersports, while the Ruzin dam in the east of the country is another good spot for lovers of the outdoors.
Head to the capital of Bratislava for the Summer of Culture Festival and the Castle Festivities, or simply enjoy the sights of the city in the warm weather. There is plenty to see and the food is great, and the city offers the best way of accessing Slovakia.
