What You Need to Know About Airbnb’s New Party, Event Ban

Planning on hosting an event at that gorgeous Airbnb you booked for later in the year? You may want to rethink that decision. In August 2020, Airbnb announced a temporary ban on all parties and events in Airbnb properties worldwide. Recently, the brand announced the ban is now permanent.

So does this mean if you rent an Airbnb in your favorite locale, you can’t invite over a few friends for a glass of wine or dinner? Not necessarily. The newly codified global party ban allows for groups to use properties, so long as those groups are under whatever size group a property can comfortably hold. For example, if a host says a villa can comfortably sleep 20 guests, then you can have 20 people over.

The permanent ban is more so geared toward events that would prove disruptive to the surrounding neighborhood. It prohibits what Airbnb calls “party house properties” and open-invite gatherings or any gatherings promoted on social media. Guests who violate these rules will either be suspended from Airbnb temporarily or removed fully from the site for good. The brand reported that, in 2021, it suspended more than 6,600 users for attempting to violate the party and event ban.
