Looking for lobster? You’ve come to the right place. The state of Maine is world renowned for its fresh-from-the-sea cuisine. Here are some tips for finding the tastiest picking of the bunch.

Know what makes a good lobster.

Half the battle of finding the best lobster is knowing how to identify a prime choice from the tank. If you’re at a supermarket or tank-to-table restaurant, look for lobsters with long antennae. The longer the antennae, the less time they’ve spent in the tank, and the more likely they were plucked from the sea that morning.

Head for the shore shacks …

While fancy, 5-star restaurants serve up undeniably delectable lobster dishes, the best meals are often offered at those little known shacks by the sea. Some of the best include Nunan’s Lobster Hut in Kennebunkport, Billy’s Chowder House in Wells and Barnacle Billy’s in Ogunquit.

… or go straight to the source.

To really get the most out of your Maine lobster dinner, skip the menu and go straight to the sea and talk to a vendor or fisherman selling out of a working waterfront. And if you’re feeling brave, fish for your dinner yourself! Lulu’s Lobster Tour in Bar Harbor is one of many ways to get on the water and learn how to catch fresh lobster.
