Tips / Travel

Winter in Europe is associated with charming Christmas markets, warm mulled wine and cuddling by the fire with the Alps in the background. But some Europeans are not as keen to freeze with the rest of the continent, and instead long to seek some sun-filled solace. When winter becomes too cold (and dark), head south to these warmer retreats.

Andalusia, Spain

Heading south is a no-brainer, but choosing the destination takes planning and decisiveness. The winter months are the best times to head to southern Spain where crowds dwindle and streets are free to roam. Spend a few days exploring sunny Seville, followed by a stop at the mesmerizing Alhambra in nearby Granada where entry lines are sure to be substantially shorter than in summer months. Daytrips to Cordoba and Cadiz round out a tour of Andalusia, the birthplace of flamenco.

Hop a plane to Europe’s version of the Caribbean islands and spend a few holiday days in the tropics. Tenerife and Grand Canaria are known for their breathtaking beaches and majestic mountains, prime for hiking.

Not only is this island nation void of tourists during the off-season, the weather hardly changes, meaning a warm Mediterranean holiday is possible nearly year-round.

Tucked away in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, Faro enjoys mild temperatures, cliff-side beaches and Portuguese hospitality regardless of the time of year.
