Dancing is an important part of the Buenos Aires’ cultural heritage. Follow these tips to get into the world of tango.
Go to a Show
This is the most common way foreigners experience tango, but any local will tell you that many of these are tourist traps. Still, the elaborate production and choreography can be very entertaining and are often packaged with dinner, drinks and sometimes group dancing and lessons. The Rojo Tango Show is often cited as a top attraction.
Partner Up
The true tango experience is found in the city’s milongas, hundreds of dance clubs dedicated to the partner dance. Different clubs will have different requirements for skill, style and dress, but there are plenty that are open to beginners and visitors. Most begin close to midnight and keep the music going until the break of dawn. Learn about some of the city’s best milongas in Trazee Travel’s piece on the Top 5: Dance Clubs of Buenos Aires.
Take a Class
With so many people coming to the city for its tango culture, there are a lot of opportunities for novices to learn the dance. Information on group and private instruction is available in most Buenos Aires hotels, varying in skill and intensity. Some offer hour-long lessons as a strictly introductory class, while others have comprehensive immersion programs with a minimum of two weeks of participation.
