Tulips have come to be indelibly linked with the Netherlands, and people travel from around the world to experience tulip season in the country.
The flowers have become a symbol of the nation, although they originated in Central Asia. They were brought to the Netherlands in the 16th century and became so popular by the 17th century the bulbs were bought and sold for incredibly high prices.
The so-called Tulip Mania of the 17th century even saw the bulbs used as a form of currency, and people would buy and sell property for a handful of tulips. Even though the mania eventually passed, tulips remained popular.
Amsterdam is home to an annual tulip festival, and there is also one of the largest gardens in Europe, known as Keukenhof, where you can marvel at thousands of the flowers.
Come to the Netherlands in springtime and you will see tulips everywhere. Kop van Noord-Holland is one of the best places to look at fields upon fields of flowers of all different colors, and there is even the world’s biggest flower auction in Amsterdam. If you can time your visit for tulip season you will be among the millions of people that make a point of visiting a truly amazing spectacle.
