You’re Going on an Ayahuasca Adventure

You’ve read the testimonials, you’ve watched the documentaries, you’ve seen JP Sears parody its use in his series Ultra Spiritual Life on YouTube and now you want to try ayahuasca. But, you don’t want to do it in your hometown at some dodgy meet-up with a questionable Shaman, you want the real deal.

If you are a bit nervous about the legality of ayahuasca, its use is legal in Peru and Ecuador, so they are both good places to start. You have a number of options in both countries for retreat centers that house you, prepare you for your journey and help you integrate the experience afterwards.

Some things to consider before you embark on your ayahuasca adventure:

Find a reputable center with a good track record. Read the comments sections of articles about ayahuasca, make note of the retreat center or Shaman the writer met with and reach out to other people who attended the ayahuasca retreat you are considering. It is a natural plant, but it can also be powerful and you want to be in the hands of an experienced Shaman — do your research.

Understand what kind of experience you want. Some centers are upscale, complete with fancy hotel rooms, elaborate vegan and gluten-free buffets and a bug-free, clean ceremony room with assistants who will whisk away your vomit bucket and return with one sparkling new. Other retreats will be in the heart of the rainforest, complete with scary insects, smothering humidity, oppressive heat and outdoor toilets. Understand what you need to be comfortable and don’t compromise.

Take it seriously. This isn’t an opportunity to get messed up and tell your friends about it afterwards. This drug, or plant medicine if you prefer, is powerful. Go in with a clear intention. Follow the diet. Don’t drink or do other drugs at least seven days before.
