The picturesque village of Zaanse Schams is famous for its traditional windmills and has become a popular daytrip destination for visitors to Amsterdam.
It used to be an important industrial area in the 18th and 19th centuries, when windmills would produce a range of goods. These same windmills still stand today, attracting visitors from far and wide.
You can wander around the village without paying admission fees, taking a look at the windmills and the surrounding area. To get a better idea of the history, check out one of the various museums, one of which is a preserved workshop.
One of the best ones is the Zaans Museum, which tells visitors about daily life in the region in years past. Another more niche attraction is Kuiperij, where you can see how barrels have been made for centuries.
Visit Zaanse Schams by train from Amsterdam, just 15 minutes away. Head from Amsterdam Centraal to Koog-Zandijk station before making the 10-minute walk. It’s so easy to get to, you can visit the area in a day if you want to visit the museums, or half a day if you just want to see the windmills.
