Nestled at the foot of the Schlossberg on the western edge of the Black Forest is the idyllic, old German university city of Freiburg.
Situated in the heart of the Baden wine-growing region and one of the sunniest and warmest destinations in the region, the medieval city is one of Germany’s most romantic destinations, and it can easily be experienced on a budget.
Due to its scenic beauty along the Dreisam River and next to the forest, Freiburg is a hub for tourism.
On a walk through town, you’ll notice a unique gutter system running along the sides of the street. Historically used to provide water for livestock, the gutters, or bächle, constantly flow with water from the river, creating a pleasant gurgling sound like a natural creek running through the city. On your stroll, stop in the Augustinerplatz, one of the central squares of old city where you’ll find the Augustiner Museum (€7 entrance fee), housing a collection of art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period, as well as the 19th century. The Botanical Garden at the University of Freiburg is also worth a visit and is free to enter.
Münster is one of the oldest and most beautiful cathedrals in Europe, with ornate gargoyles and a high tower offering views of the city. Entry costs only €1.50.
Also in the old town square is a popular brewery and beer garden, Feierling, where you can enjoy an authentic German meal and great beer for only a few euros. Cheap, quality food is not difficult to come by in Freiburg. Due to the city’s proximity to other European countries, there are plenty of restaurants in a variety of prices. For affordable Italian, visit Firenze or Milano, where you can grab a pizza for €2; and for local cuisine, visit Brennessel, Atlantik or Mensa Drei for great currywurst for around €5.
The best way to get around Freiburg is by foot and public transportation using the bus or tram network. A singe ride ticket for rides on the buses, trams and local trains costs around €2.20 to get around the main city limits.
