The lobby was a sea of white and red as I prepared to check-in to AC Hotel Ciudad de Pamplona, in the midst of the Festival of San Fermin, Pamplona’s famous Running of the Bulls. Despite the crowds, the staff was pleasant and patient. My room was not yet ready, but they held my bags until I returned later in the day.

Not directly located in the center of the city, the hotel afforded some peace and quiet away from the chaos of the festival. For guests interested in catching the early morning bull runs and other activities, shuttle service was available.

Off the lobby was a bar/restaurant, and downstairs was another dining area, where a succulent breakfast spread was displayed each morning. My second-floor room had two double beds, a desk, a stand with a flat-screen TV and the mini-bar, and a large bathroom. I was so busy during the festival, I did not spend a ton of time in my room, but it was nice to return each afternoon after the bull runs to catch up on some work and get ready for the evening. The hotel was subdued at this time of the day, and the WiFi was complimentary.

In addition to the mini-bar, guests can purchase snacks, beverages and souvenirs in the lobby. A fully equipped fitness center includes cardio machines and weights, a Turkish bath, towels and water.

The staff was friendly and the accommodations comfortable. My only complaint was the walls were a bit thin, so I could hear people in other guestrooms moving about. Given the festival and the celebrations, it could be unique to this time of the year, with more street noise also a factor.

We all have our favorite bars, but is yours truly one of the best? A new study from Upgraded Points looked at Yelp reviews for bars specifically described as “cocktail bars,” comparing average star ratings in the 100 largest metro areas throughout the country. As a result, it uncovered what it feels are the U.S. destinations with the most highest-rated bars — and when you think cocktail culture, you probably don’t think about the city that came out on top.
