On my recent trip to Lisbon, my group and I kept our entire first day unplanned so we could explore the city freely. This meant no dinner reservations. We had multiple places on our list to try, and found ourselves in the neighborhood of Cantinho do Avillez shortly after it opened for dinner service. Thankfully they were able to accommodate our table of four, even without a reservation.
Located in the city’s Chiado neighborhood, the restaurant is helmed by Chef José Avillez. His other outpost, Belcanto, has appeared on several best restaurants in the world lists and earned two Michelin stars. We were excited to sample cuisine from a Michelin-starred chef at a lower price point and without having to make a reservation in advance.
The menu features contemporary Portuguese cuisine. We started with a bottle of rosé for the table and a basket of bread with butter while we perused the menu. We decided to split the cured sausage and tuna tartare as starters. Of the two, I preferred the tartare. For my main, I ordered the flaked cod, as I wanted to sample as much seafood as possible while in Portugal. The dish was accompanied with green beans, cabbage and eggs. While it was flavorful, it was not my favorite bite of the night. My husband ordered the steak sandwich, another popular Portuguese dish. While simple, with just steak, garlic sauce and salt on bread, it was a standout dish. I was a bit jealous of his entrée!
Cantinho do Avillez is a great spot if you want to experience Avillez’s cuisine in a more casual setting.
