Catalina Kitchen at Terranea Resort recently reopened following dining room renovations. The new concept introduced an open kitchen, offering guests a front-row seat for the culinary action. The new American menu highlights California coastal favorites, using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
We were lucky enough to dine at Catalina Kitchen during the restaurant’s first Sunday brunch service in the new design. We opted to sample the buffet-style brunch instead of ordering from the a la carte menu. The spread was one of the best hotel brunches I’ve ever experienced. Besides all of the standards, Catalina Kitchen offers many unique stations and dishes. I didn’t know where to start!
After doing a quick walk through the buffet layout to plan our attack, I started at the omelet station. The chefs prepare your omelet in front of you, from a selection of vegetables, cheese and protein. I added some breakfast potatoes and bacon mac and cheese on the side. For my second plate, I made my way to the raw bar for some chilled shrimp and a few bites of sushi. Other options included a carving station, charcuterie & cheese station, breakfast classics, toasts and pastries. I wanted to end my meal on a sweet note. There were many dessert options, including donuts and gelato. However, I instead decided on a slice of Hawaiian French toast. It was sweet, but not too overpowering, and the perfect end to my meal.
Catalina Kitchen also offers a bottomless mimosa or Bloody Mary add-on with brunch. As we had plans the rest of the day, we opted to skip the bottomless option and each ordered one mimosa with our meal. Breakfast is served daily, though the spectacular brunch only takes place on Sunday. Catalina Kitchen hosts lunch and dinner, too.
