Russia is an amazing country, but it is also heavily bureaucratic. For visitors using rental cars, this translates to a long and extensive process when Russian traffic laws have been violated.

Like most European countries, mother Russia requires motorists to drive on the right side of the road. They must be 18 years or older, and picking up hitchhikers is considered illegal and punishable by fine.

In Moscow, the traffic police often set up blockades, inspecting vehicles to make sure they are up to standards. It is illegal to drive a dirty car, and if caught at one of these blockades or hidden traps along the beltway, police will often deliver heavy fines. If the license plate is impaired by dirt or mud, the chance of repercussions only increases. Furthermore, dipped lights are required at all times, even during the day.

If in Russia for less than six months, an American needs only to get a certified translation of the driver’s license. However, if their time in the country exceeds six months, they must go through the process of obtaining a proper Russian license. This procedure involves applying at the GIBDD (Federal Road Safety Service) office with a passport, Russian visa, medical certificate and translated U.S. driver’s license.
