With the fall equinox fast approaching, now is the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful foliage in New England. Vermont, often hailed as the maple sugar state, has an abundance of red-hued maple and sugar maple trees.  These trees cover more than three-quarters of the state and create picture-perfect autumn views. Visit these five fall destinations to celebrate and appreciate the season.

Start by checking the foliage forecaster on the Vermont Vacation website to ensure the best possible trip.

Enjoy the undeveloped stretches of Route 100, which runs north-south from Readsboro to Newport and crosses the Green Mountains. This drive is an ideal way for the busy traveler to appreciate the fall foliage.

Hike through Coolidge State Park in Plymouth and take in views of the Black River Valley and Green Mountains. This park is one of the largest in central Vermont and offers more than 21,000 acres of recreation space.

Take I-91 from White River Junction to Newport for views of the Connecticut River Valley.  While this drive is faster paced than local roads, it still offers spectacular views of the changing colors.

Experience the foliage in one of the state’s apple farms. The state offers a unique Apples to iPods program to encourage orchard tourism — select orchards place wooden apples in their groves and exchange them for iPods.

Check out the views from Mt. Philo State Park in Charlotte, and catch the fall raptor migration as the birds fly over the Champlain Valley.

Vermont offer many ways to enjoy the region’s beautiful foliage, visit Vermont Vacations website for a scenic driving guide and savor the season.
