The Congo River is one of those rare and elusive travel adventures not many people get to explore. If you’re dead set on making your way down this beautiful and infamous body of water, there are some companies to help you out.
Undiscovered Destinations Congo River Expedition
Undiscovered Destinations offers a 29-day tour down the Congo beginning in the city of Mbandaka down to Kisangani. You’ll spend your days onboard a 34-meter-long wooden boat with a tour guide and cook on hand, while nights are spent ashore mingling with locals.
Virunga Amani Tours
If you’re looking for something a little shorter, Virunga Amani Tours offers a 22-day trip down the Congo beginning in Kisanagani and ending in Kinshasa, or vice versa. The tour guides provide tents to sleep in as well as a city tour of Kinshasa, the capital of the D.R. Congo.
Safari Guides
Safari Guides offers a similar trip that seems to work in tandem with the same tour guides and boats, but lasts only 21 days. It also begins in Kinshasha and includes stops along other small cities and villages along the way.
Wild Frontiers
If you’re game to go a little further into the forest, Wild Frontiers offers a trip down the river that includes deep treks into the wilderness along the way. One of the highlights of the trip includes a visit to the Bonobo Ape Project in Bolobo.
