All across the world, transgender film festivals have been gaining popularity and esteem. The festivals aim to empower marginalized and under-represented groups and provide a platform for transgender and gender-variant filmmakers while promoting visibility, culture and community. Or, as the LA festival explains, showcasing work by “all those who identify as contributing of gender fabulousness.”
San Francisco Transgender Film Festival
This original festival featuring works about and by transgender and gender-variant people, San Fran’s autumn event is going into its 18th year. The past year saw more than 130 film submissions and was sold out for the entire weekend.
TranScreen
Amsterdam’s film festival has produced offshoots in theatres around the Netherlands’ capital and is building an exchange with the Kuir Festival in Ankara, Turkey. The festival is in June.
LA Transgender Film Fest
LA’s festival takes place across three days in June, with encore screenings in the local community throughout the year. It is currently in its sixth year.
Sydney Transgender International Film Festival
Three hundred films from producers in 21 countries submitted their work to be part of Sydney’s second annual festival in December, whose feature films hailed from Denmark, Pakistan and the United States.
Translations: the Seattle Transgender Film Festival
Last year’s festival featured films from 11 different countries in nine categories. The Seattle festival is entering its 10-year anniversary and takes place in May.
Kiel Transgender Film Festival
Germany’s popular festival runs in May and shows documentaries and feature films. The audience gets to vote on their favorites in categories from Best Film to Best DVD Cover.
