Nicaragua’s volcanic landscapes lend themselves to some great hiking. So where should you go when you’re looking to stretch your legs?
For a unique experience, it’s hard to beat the island of Ometepe in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. Here, you can climb the two volcanoes that form the island or take a hike along the beaches if you’re not feeling up to the ascent.
Head to northern Nicaragua to climb Cosigüina, a volcano looking down over the Gulf of Fonseca. It’s a spectacular view from the lip, and you can continue into the crater to take a swim in the lake to cool down.
If you are in the surf town of San Juan del Sur and want to explore, there is a good hike that starts from the center of town. Set off along the cliffs on the trail behind the fish market and you will be able to follow it along to the lighthouse, passing an old fort on the way.
Another top spot for hikers is the Miraflor National Park near Esteli in the north of the country, and the nearby Somoto Canyon. At the latter, you can hike, swim and canyon on an all-day adventure.
