Perhaps spring break trips have a bit of a bad reputation. But this year, make your spring break count. Spend time in the service of others and redefine the college spring break stereotypes.
While some schools offer alternative spring break trips and opportunities, they may not be the right match. Sometimes it’s nice to have a change of pace and meet people outside your school community.
The United Way has a host of U.S-based spring break trips that students can apply to via the United Way’s website. Prices range from $0–395 per trip and are available throughout the month of March. Apply to build houses in El Paso, Texas — one of the poorest areas in the nation — or help plant a community garden in Williamson County, Tenn.
In addition to these projects, the United Way has partner projects that address multiple issues and have a slightly different application process. For example, travel to New Jersey and work on Mark Zuckerburg’s pet project of improving schools in Newark. These spring break programs include a full day of service along with time for socializing, sightseeing and relaxing in the evenings.
When volunteering in a new environment, it is especially important that you feel comfortable and motivated in the work you are doing.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?
