About halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco is San Luis Obispo, the city claiming to be “The Happiest Place in America.” After spending a day here, it will become clear why residents and travelers fall for this coastal town.
Start the day with a large, refreshing smoothie from Joe Momma’s Coffee, the Triple XXX Berry Kiss includes strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. A 20-ounce drink costs $5.50.
Spend the morning at Avila Beach, enjoy the sunshine, swim or relax with a good book. Early risers can stop by before breakfast and watch a picturesque sunrise.
Enjoy a relaxing lunch at Fat Cat’s Café. Try a Veggie Sandwich with sprouts, mushrooms, spinach, avocado, lettuce and tomato plus a side of fries for $11.50.
Take a vineyard tour and enjoy a wine tasting at Peloton Cellars located near Avila Beach. The vineyard’s name derives from the French word for “group” and also references the founder’s love of bicycling. Tasting prices vary, but the quality never dips.
Head back to the beach in time for sunset and then have dinner at Old Custom House. Order a sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms flatbread, which features fresh mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and Asiago cheese with fresh herbs. Complete the meal with a decadent Salted Caramel Pecan Cheesecake for less than $20.
The remaining money, about $30, can be spent on tips, snacks and souvenirs. Be sure to plan a return trip to the “Happiest Place in America’ and discover what else the city has to offer.
