Under $100 / North America

The charming colonial city of San Miguel de Allende is small enough that walking everywhere is largely a breeze, though you may occasionally find yourself forced to scale a few sizable hills. Taxis are quite cheap, but you will be missing out as galleries and shops are best found as you walk the city’s cobbled streets.

While there are numerous options for breakfast, start at Café Muro where the eggs Benedict is to die for and the waiters keep your coffee cup full in this three-story restaurant and café. Following your meal, walk down to La Fabrica and spend a few hours perusing the near hundreds of galleries and artist studios that populate this old textile factory.

Following your hours in La Fabrica, you’ve likely worked up an appetite so head toward the center for some lunch. While it looks like a tourist trap, Los Milagros is anything but and a perfect spot for a few beers and delicious food provided by friendly staff while listening to live music and strolling around laughing at the window boxes that adorn the walls called nichos. They are all available for sale and you’ll likely buy a few.

You’ve had Mexican food and will have plenty of opportunities to have street tacos as the night gets later, but for a unique experience and brilliant New Orleans’ offerings and oysters, along with a martini or two in a delightful bar setting, check out Hank’s.

San Miguel offers a lot in the way of nightlife whether you’re just wandering around or looking for something special. Mama Mia’s goes late and offers karaoke on Sundays. If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed check out La Noche Piano Bar and its live music nightly.
