Under $100 / Asia

Tohoku is a remote, scenic region in the northeastern portion of Honshu, the largest of Japan’s islands.

The remote destination quickly became a major tourism destination for its breathtaking natural scenery, despite major earthquakes and tsunamis in 2006 and 2011 and frequent harsh weather.

From the forested internal mountain regions to the picturesque city of Sendai, the Tohoku region offers something for every traveler and, fortunately for those traveling on a budget, some of the most unique experiences in Tohoku are free.

The region’s natural landscapes offer outstanding hiking and winter sports, and it’s also home to several hot springs. Visit Mount Bandai, Mount Hayachine, Rikuchu Kaigan National Park and Bandai-Asahi National Park for hiking, trekking and camping; see the cherry blossoms in spring; and experience the beauty of the Shimokita Peninsula and Yagen Valley in warmer months.

Throughout the region’s prefectures, there are several castles, samurai residents and historic temples like Hiraizumi and Yamadera. Entrance fees to historic sites are either free or less than $3 on average.

Tohoku is famous for its strongly flavored foods, beef, pickles, rice and its fruit as producer of most of Japan’s apples, pears, cherries and peaches.

In Yamagata, try the cold meat soba at Chottotei and cold ramen at Sakaeya Honten; and, in Sendai, visit Soba no Kanda Nakakecho, a delicious, inexpensive noodle place. Grab a bowl of kirtanpo, a hot pot with pounded rice and chicken stock, anywhere in the region for a couple dollars.

The region is large and mountainous, so getting around can be time-consuming but not expensive. The Tohoku Shinkansen train connects most major cities, and there are rural trains connecting small towns. The scenery along the train routes is stunning.

The JR East Rail Pass lets you travel for free on all JR East lines including the Tohoku Shinkansen and its spur lines. There are different durations, including a four-day Flex Pass for less than $5. Buses offer even cheaper alternatives for west-east travel. Renting a car is another good option, as rental car outlets are conveniently located near train stations in major cities and are relatively cheap. Note that in the winter, many roads are closed.
