Under $100 / Europe

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Antwerp is one of Belgium and Europe’s most important port cities, situated on the River Scheldt. It is also known as the diamond capital of the world for its large diamond district, through which 84 percent of the world’s rough diamonds pass.

Some of the city’s most memorable experiences and iconic landmarks can be enjoyed for free. Take in the unique Flemish Renaissance architecture in the Grote Markt, a central square in the old town. Wander through the lawns, gardens and modern art installations at Middelheim Open Air Sculpture Museum, and experience the grandeur of the city’s neo-Baroque Central Station, built by Leopold II in 1905.

See and feel the challenges of the Middle Ages at The Maagdenhuis Museum, housed in a historic building constructed in the 16th century for only €8 and, for literature lovers, the Letter House honors the Flemish literary traditions with an impressive collection, viewable for only €5.

Belgium is famous for its food, from its waffles and chocolate to its meat and seafood, and the best part is you don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy the best eats in the city. Stop by Fish A’GoGo or Bia Mara for some deep-fried seafood perfection, where you can get a fresh, filling meal for a couple of euros. Paters Vaetje is a great traditional Belgian pub serving plenty of beer and heaping dishes for affordable prices. Craving something salty? Seek out Frites Atelier Amsterdam for a hot, crispy snack for only a few euros.

Antwerp is a beautiful city, and it’s worth taking in on foot. Aside from walking, one of the best ways to get around Antwerp is biking. It’s the most popular means of transportation among locals, and there are plenty of places to rent and lock up bikes. Public transportation comprises buses and trams, with ticket prices less than €2.
