The Greek capital is jam-packed with delicious restaurants, raucous bars and ancient history. It’s a city of contrasts, and a fascinating one at that.
Head to Mama Roux for a trendy breakfast, where the huge portions will give you the fuel you need for the day ahead. Eggs Benedict, pancakes and bagels are all on the menu ($10).
Beat the heat by walking up to the Acropolis in the morning, taking a stroll around the ancient ruins and looking down over Athens below. Take a look inside the Acropolis Museum ($5) to find out more about the history of this amazing structure and what it meant to the ancient Greeks before strolling back into town for some lunch.
Try the modern taverna cuisine at Strofi, where you can look up at the Acropolis while you eat ($15). Get an iced coffee to stave off any mid-afternoon slump, and take a walk up to the anarchist neighborhood of Exarchia, where the street art is loud and the rock bars even louder. Shop for vintage records, take in the atmosphere and stop in at a taverna for a refreshing beer ($3).
For dinner, head back to the center of town and the Plaka district. It might be touristy in general, but the food at Psarras is so good even real Athenians brave the crowds. Chow down on some classic Greek cooking ($20) as you listen to live music.
After dinner, drinks can be had all over the city, including at the hipster spot Osterman and the more rustic Spirtokouto (beers $4). Don’t forget to try the ouzo!
