Daufuskie Island in South Carolina, located between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, is the southernmost inhabited sea island in South Carolina, and a hidden historical gem. It is necessary to take a ferry to reach the island, where most of the island is limited to travel by golf cart. It is perfect for a quick daytrip or for some weekend exploration if you do not have a home on the island.
It’s an extremely remote and quiet island, with only a hundred or so full-time residents and several communities. Rent a golf cart and take yourself on a self-guided tour for a great experience. Here are some things to check out while exploring the Lowcountry island.
The Bloody Point Lighthouse, located on the southern tip of the island, was built in 1883 and looks like a home rather than a lighthouse. It’s named for the Indian battles that took place in the 1700s. It is now a museum open to the public.
Learn about the rich American Indian and Gullah Tribe culture of the island by stopping by this small museum.
Grab lunch at the Freeport Marina for some waterfront, Southern comfort food, live music, a lively bar and more. They large outdoor deck area is perfect to enjoy the water views and some peel-and-eat shrimp.
Take a tour of the island’s rum distillery for some taste-tests and fun. Each rum is distilled, bottled and packaged by hand on the island.
