Under $100 / North America

Fresno, Calif., is the state’s largest inland city. The skyline boasts views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The city’s cultural and outdoor activities offer something for everyone.

Start your day at Fresno Breakfast House. Open at 6 a.m. daily, the charming eatery offers a vast selection of homestyle breakfast classics with garden-area seating. Spend $7–15 on your meal. Visit the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. Situated on 39 acres, the zoo is home to more than 190 species and offers up-close-and-personal opportunities for visitors to interact with animals. Adult admission costs $10.

Enjoy lunch at The Vineyard Restaurant and Bar. Popular among locals, the restaurant specializes in Italian-influenced cuisine using local and seasonal ingredients. Sandwiches start at $10. Take a stroll through Shinzen Japanese Garden. Located in Woodward Park, the serene garden promotes Japanese educational and cultural awareness. Adult garden entry costs $5. Next, stop by the Fresno Art Museum. Open Thursday–Sunday, the museum houses a varied collection of art including contemporary pieces, Mexican art and Pre-Columbian sculptures. Adult admission costs $10.

Grab Mexican grub at Plaza Ventana Mexican Restaurant. With two locations in Fresno, the award-winning eatery serves up street-style tacos, fajitas, quesadillas and other Mexican specialties. Have a nightcap at Goldstein’s Mortuary and Delicatessen. Don’t let the name fool you: Goldstein’s is indeed a bar and not a funeral home. Plenty of craft beers are on tap and the lively bar often features live music with no cover. A beer costs $5–12 depending on the pour.
