Under $100 / Europe

In the Middle Ages, Ghent was a prominent city-state, and today it’s a bustling university town and cultural hub. The port city boasts a historic pedestrian center, surrounded by medieval architecture like the 12th-century Gravensteen Castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie River harbor.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing cities in the world, Ghent is home to breathtaking landmarks like the 10th-century St. Bavo’s Cathedral, the 14th-century Belfry of Ghent and the late Gothic Saint Nicholas’ Church. It’s one of the easiest cities to enjoy on a budget, as most of these awe-inspiring sights can be experienced for free or at little expense. Gravensteen Castle costs €10, but is well worth it, and the STAM Museum is €8, which tells the city’s dynamic history.

You can find delicious, affordable food on every corner in Ghent. For burger lovers, head to Paul’s Boutique, where they serve hearty, gourmet vegetarian and beef burgers with creative toppings. Soup’r is your go-to spot for quick, cheap and delicious Thai-inspired soups, and for traditional Flemish cuisine, head to Publiek for a dynamic twist on local classics.

Ghent’s city center is pedestrian and cyclist friendly. With the bus and tram system, you can reach any part of the city quickly and easily for only a few euro, and taxis are also available for a bit more.
