Under $100 / Europe

Bavaria’s second-largest city is just a quick train ride from the region’s capital city of Munich, and is just as ripe with history, architecture and world-famous beer. Although know for the Nazi trials of the 1940s, the medieval city has been reborn and can be seen in as little as one day, with the largest expense being a pint of Bavarian beer.

Prepare for a day of walking (and climbing hills) with a coffee and pastry at Casa Pane in the old town. Then, begin a day in Nuremberg at the focal point of the city: the castle. Tackle the steep hill that leads to the medieval marvel and reward yourself with views of the entire city. The $7.55 entrance fee allows access to the tower, well, palace and the Kaiserburg Museum.

After visiting the royal grounds, head back down the hill to the old town, or Altstadt. Roam the cobblestone streets and window shop through the tiny alleyways. After experiencing near complete destruction during World War II, the area was rebuilt and continues to charm both locals and visitors.

In the afternoon, visit Hauptmarkt, an open-air market where a handful of stalls of fruits, vegetables and flowers lie in the shadows of towering Gothic cathedrals. During the winter holiday season, this square transforms into a traditional German Christmas Market.

Round out the day with a variety of wurst and beer at Wurstdurst, a casual eatery with spicy sausages, fries and local brews. Prost!
