Situated off the coast of Spain lies the three Balearic Islands, three small Mediterranean gems that differ greatly in terms of activities and culture. But the one thing they have in common is stunning scenery, miles of coastline and endless views of the surrounding sea. Mallorca is the largest of the three islands, but can be seen in a relatively short amount of time, beginning in the capital city of Palma.
After filling yourself with a proper English breakfast at Café Capritxo, your first stop should be Palma’s cathedral, where the world´s largest rose window contributes to this feat of Gothic architecture. There is a €6 fee to enter the cathedral, but the price is worth it to view the interior, parts of which were designed by Antoni Gaudi. Across the small plaza is Almudaina Palace, a former fortress from the period of Moorish occupation in Spain.
A visit to Mallorca is not complete without a few hours at the sandy beaches. To escape the crowds, Playa de S’Amador is an idyllic setting for a calm afternoon under the sun. Located one hour due east of Palma, the beach is also at the mouth of a national park. Stay closer to Mallorca by visiting Playa de Cala Mayor or Playa de Palma. Visitors seeking a bit more of a challenge should embark on an exhilarating hike up to Serra de Tramuntana, where views are incomparable.
After sunset, head to the seaside promenade where bars offer both outdoor and indoor seating, with views of the port. Dance the night away under the stars at Passarella Club, Blue Sky or Mira Blau.
