Under $100 / North America

The sleepy beach town of Rincon de Guayabitos is popular with families and others looking to relax and not much else.

Grab breakfast at El Rodeo, with its traditional Mexican menu. Get the huevos rancheros for a great start to the day ($5). Go down to the beach and book a boat tour to the Isla Coral and Isla Cangrejo, where you can go swimming and snorkeling ($15). It’s a beautiful boat ride, and the islands are great for exploring.

For lunch, get some prawn and fish skewers from the food carts on the beach. They are fresh from the sea and truly delicious, served with salad, beans and tortillas ($2.50 per skewer). Watch out for the pelicans that wait for scraps; they seem to have lost all fear of humans and come amazingly close to you while you eat.

Take the afternoon to sunbathe on the beach or by the pool, and then go for drinks at Matejas Bar and Grill looking over the bay (beers $1.50). Go to Salvador’s Restaurant for dinner ($12), and then head off for a night out at La Bubis bar (beers $2). It might sound like a strip club, but it’s not.
