Under $100 / Europe

Look at a map of the massive Scandinavian country of Sweden, and at the bottom you’ll see a tiny town called Ystad, tucked into a tiny cove on the southern coast. While this small town may be overlooked for larger neighbors like Malmö or even Copenhagen across the water in Denmark, Ystad possesses its own charm and history that can make for a lovely seaside road trip.

You would be remiss to begin a Swedish morning without a cup of some of the world’s strongest coffee. The Swedes know how to properly caffeinate themselves, and the nature-laden patio at Hos Morten café is an ideal place to do just that.

Soak up Ystad’s medieval history with a visit to 13th-century Greyfriars Abbey. For 50 SEK (approximately $6), wander the abbey grounds and take in some of the oldest architecture in Sweden before spending a few peaceful moments in the gardens featuring fresh roses and a pond.

Continue a religious tour of Ystad by entering Saint Mary’s Church, a collection of Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque styles of architecture.

Cinephiles should make a point to visit the Cineteket film museum and studio where old movie and television show props, costumes and sets are on display. Admission is 60 SEK (slightly more than $7) and includes a short film about the well-known TV series Wallander.

Save your money for a delectable Swedish dinner at the park-adjacent Nora Promenaden Tradgardsrestaurang, but book an early table as Swedes typically eat dinner well before 9 p.m.
