The teams are set. The countdown is on. The World Cup returns this summer.

The 7th FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place in cities across Canada in June and July this year. Japan, the 2011 World Cup winner, looks to defend.

The World Cup isn’t just a soccer tournament. It is a celebration. It is a festival. It is part Olympics and part Super Bowl. And it is taking place in a city near you.

The cities in Canada hosting World Cup games include Montreal, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Moncton and Vancouver. The semi-finals will be held in Montreal and the finals in Vancouver. Conspicuously absent is Toronto, which decided not to make a bid.

Prices for the games are affordable. The most expensive seat at the finals is only $165 and tickets for other games are around $20.

The U.S. women’s team enters the tournament as early favorites. They were beat by Japan in the finals in 2011 and lost in 1999. Germany, back-to-back champions in the 2000s, and Japan are also heavy favorites. And Brazil is, of course, always a force to be reckoned with. Host country Canada should put on a strong performance as well.

In the group stage, the United States will play Australia, Nigeria and a strong squad from Sweden in Winnipeg.

The atmosphere during the World Cup is like no other. Last year’s men’s World Cup stirred up more excitement than ever in the United States, converting non-believers into soccer fanatics across the country. Look for that excitement to carry over to this year’s women’s cup.
