As if there were not already enough reasons to visit the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, the Olympic Games are coming to town this summer.

Rio is home to iconic sights such as Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Copacabana beach. The relaxed lifestyle and numerous attractions combine to make it the most visited city in the southern hemisphere.

This summer, Rio will get a huge influx of visitors as the 2016 Olympic Games are hosted in the city. Heroes from all over the world will compete for medals on behalf of their countries in events ranging from athletics and rowing to showjumping and clay pigeon shooting.

The magic of the Olympics is there truly is something for everyone. Athletes who partake in some of the world’s more obscure sports suddenly find themselves in the limelight as entire nations crowd around their TV sets to watch them go for gold.

Book a trip to Rio in August and you can see the sports for yourself. Proceedings begin with an opening ceremony Aug. 5, with the closing ceremony on Aug. 21.

Given the high demand for accommodations, you will have to book soon, but ongoing political unrest in Brazil could mean some visitors stay away and keep prices down. If you aren’t afraid of getting caught in a massive demonstration or two, this could be the perfect chance to experience Rio and the Olympic Games.
