Swiss start-up Polarmond developed a revolutionary camping system which it claims will provide a warmer, more comfortable night’s sleep in cold weather.
As experienced campers know, it is essential to pack a waterproof tent, a sleeping mat and a decent sleeping bag if you are heading into colder environments. Up until now those elements were sold and packed separately, but Polarmond believes they are better off as part of one integrated system.
The Polarmond All-In-One system boasts a sleep shell, which has all of the features of a traditional mummy sleeping bag but affords the occupant far more space. Through the use of high-tech materials, Polarmond negates the need for a separate sleeping bag, instead allowing you to pass the night in an insulated chamber using only a sleep liner. Both the floor and the walls of the chamber are insulated to lock in warmth and allow excess moisture to escape.
The sleep shell zips around your head, allowing you to sleep with your face under the stars if the weather permits. In cold or rainy conditions the company also sells a bivouac system which provides shelter for your head.
For those in need of more space, to store your pack for example, there is also a tent version. The modules have been tested down to -30 degrees Centigrade, and are relatively heavy as a result. The tent version weighs in at 4.8–5.2 kilograms depending on the weight of lining, but you have to think it replaces a traditional tent, heavy sleeping pad and well-insulated sleeping bag.
So far the company has not announced pricing details, but the cost will be a huge factor in driving sales. If Polarmond cannot offer its integrated solution for less money than buying separate components it seems unlikely there will be much demand.
