Recho is an app with the potential to be amazing, but it just isn’t on many people’s radar.
Attempting to combine a social media experience with your real-time physical surroundings, Recho allows users to make audio recordings of up to 30 seconds, which are then accessible to either the entire world or your select group of friends. However, this app is much more than simple audio recordings. The creators wanted to tie an aural experience to a place, the same way hearing a certain sound can often take us back to a particular memory. Along this line of thinking, other users’ recordings are only available to you when you’re within 50 feet of where the recording was taken. A handy compass feature allows you to see recordings near you and go to the correct spot to listen to them. You can also sign up for a Pro version of the app, which will allow you to throw your recordings to certain locations for people there to listen to without you actually having to make your recording in that spot.
The app is pretty straightforward and only has a few controls. As soon as you open the app, it takes you to the compass, where you can also record by clicking on a large white circle in the center of the screen. You can follow the circles on the edge of the screen to find recordings to listen to, as the app tracks your real-time movement. You can toggle between all recordings, curated recordings and friends’ recordings. Your profile page will let you see your own recordings, previously listened to recordings, friends’ profiles and options.
The app is free and a great new way to explore a destination with your ears.
