While rail travel may not be as popular stateside as it is in other destinations around the world, rail fans still find plenty of opportunities to enjoy America’s rail culture without leaving the country. Here are three all-American, can’t-miss rail experiences.
This cog railway climbs 14,115 feet to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. The highest railway in America, it is one of only two remaining U.S. cog railways, and also the highest cog railway in the world. Bundle your rail trip up Pikes Peak with a stay at the nearby 5-star Broadmoor for extra savings on the experience.

Following along Route 66, Grand Canyon Railway travels between Williams, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. The train features antique rail cars dating back to the 1930s. A trip to and from Williams includes a two-hour-plus layover at Grand Canyon National Park. It’s a unique way to visit the park without battling the traffic that brings tourists to one of America’s most popular destinations.
If you visit New York City often and are up for visiting a new museum, you’ve likely already explored — or at least heard of — The New York Transit Museum. But did you know this museum, dedicated to the city’s history of mass transportation, also hosts nostalgia rides?
