Destinations / North America

Bar Harbor may be best known as a summer, seaside getaway, but this destination still has its haunts. If you’re in the area in October, consider a visit to the following ghostly locales.

The 1804 Coach Stop Inn

This inn is one of the older buildings in the area and served as a coach stop when it was originally built. Now, it’s a bed and breakfast, but it’s still home to some playful ghosts that purportedly flicker the lights and lock the doors.

Balance Rock Inn

This Gilded Age mansion was built in 1903 as a vacation home and is now a AAA Four Diamond inn. It supposedly has at least one ghost to its name.

The Criterion Theater

The ghost of a past projectionist reportedly haunts The Criterion Theater. Some say the theater is easily one of the most haunted spots in Bar Harbor, if not due to the number of ghosts, then due to the amount of activity. Visitors have reported orbs and full-body apparitions.

Of course, if you want the best access to some of Bar Harbor’s haunts, don’t go it alone. Instead, book a ghost tour for insider knowledge of all the local paranormal hotspots.
